Eight:

All anyone was talking about on campus was the upcoming ball. A coming-of-age celebration for all the new wave of immortal youths. This was designed and organized by the campus with help from the pixies and gnomes from New Tren Na Nogg. The wee people love a good party, and pixies, as well as gnomes love to create colorful, and enchanting props for festivities.

I saw the slightly burned and scarred flaming redhead directing the precession of madness and utter chaos. Aunt Fray was the very image of her twin, Morgana, minus the burns. Where Morgana was a fire bird, an archdemon with minor druidic powers, Fray was a druid with very little demonic abilities. They are yin and yang to one another.

“Dylan, Jaxie!”

Aunt Fray exclaimed as she turned and seemed surprised to find us behind her.

“Hi Aunt Fray,”

We both parroted at the same moment. Her green gaze looked over us, and she seemed to take us in with disbelief.

“To think you are both over age, already. It’s been no time at all since the first time your mothers let me hold you both.”

Fray mused to us, and I knew her history as well as any being. Many beings didn’t truly understand Fray’s part in our recent apocalypse. She was being used by her former mate, Calder. He was puppeteering her every action with his will. The type of sheer domination his powers wrought upon her left her deeply scarred inside and out. She was still learning to live with the atrocities she’d be privy to and aided in committing.

“Can’t be a kid forever, thankfully.”

I said, and Jaxie grinned and nodded in agreement. I knew my twin well-enough to know she was holding back on the sassier version of her thoughts. Jaxie could seem like a perfect little angel in public. She was exceedingly good at hoodwinking the adults around her, except for our parents, of course. They knew her entirely too well.

“To think this little shindig is tomorrow. I’d hoped for more time to go shopping in the Silver City, but ya know.”

Jaxie said to Aunt Fray, who nodded her understanding. Fray looked us over, her smile as warm as the glow in her heart. The embers of love and new familial bonds appeared to be mending Fray slowly.

“I’d hoped my sister, your mum, would be able to come down for a bit. She sent me word that she was extremely busy with something dire and cosmically threatening.”

Fray informed us, and my eyes bulged, and my heart clenched.

“You talked to Momma Morgana?!”

I asked, nearly bordering on demand, and Fray sighed and said, “She is my twin, so yes, we communicate more often than she can with any other being, aside from Mavis, of course. She said to kiss you both for her on the night of your coming-of-age ball. She also said to tell you both to keep leaning into your individual strengths. That you would both mature rapidly into powerful women.”

Aunt Fray said, and I felt fuzzy as the words seemed to coat me in a new layer of self-confidence.
